Despite being built for the public, most of Bengaluru’s parks remain closed between 10 AM and 4 PM, limiting access for citizens. This lack of open, free public spaces has led to growing concerns. However, the BBMP is now addressing this issue by introducing modern-day ‘katte’ spaces—small, open public areas designed for community interaction. One such space at Maurya Circle near Freedom Park features an amphitheater, gazebo, and seating areas, offering an all-day accessible green zone. Experts emphasize the need for site-specific public spaces that cater to different localities. With increasing urbanization, initiatives like ‘katte’ can foster community engagement and make the city’s outdoor spaces more inclusive and welcoming.
